Highlights of this farm have been admired and enjoyed all over the world.

Not only has this little neck of the woods been treasured by a global audience, but it has also been the teaching ground for several online and local courses.

The gardens found on the homestead are not your average gardens.  Each has been carefully designed by a Kentucky Master Gardener with proper drainage, fertilization, and soil PH in mind.

This beautiful property has been the home of a 25 week-long Master Gardening Class, garden tours, wildflower hunts, girl scout troops, and has also been used by local UK Extension office for teaching and enrichment experiences.

The current owners built this place with their hands, sweat, and hearts.  It is a turn-key operation for anyone interested in getting out of the rat race and joining the growing number of brave souls who want to return to a simpler life.

The home sits on 23 1/2 acres of land.  The house was built just 11 years ago and has been recently updated.

Above grade (above ground): 2880 sq ft.

Below grade (basement) finished:  910 sq ft.

Below grade unfinished: 400 sq ft.

There are 4 pastures, all equipped with shelters for livestock.  There is water available throughout the farm, in the barns, garden, and fields.  In addition to the 4 fields, there are 2 smaller paddocks/ fenced-in areas that can be used for chickens, pigs or smaller livestock.

There are several buildings on the property:

  • the big red barn
  • the milking parlor
  • the sheep/ calf shed
  • the chicken coop
  • 3 run-ins
  • and even an outhouse

THE GARDENS

There are 2 gardens on the property.

One is a lovely tiered garden perfect for row crops.

The other is a raised bed garden (with 21 beds) fully equipped with walking paths and a fence to keep all the local critters away from the vegetables.

The gardens are layered with manure and compost providing the richest soil.  If you have a budding green thumb, your efforts will easily thrive thanks to the groundwork that has been done.

THE GROVE

There are 6 peach trees, 6 apple trees, and 6 pear trees in the orchard.

Just past the fields and gardens are acres and acres of woods.  There are trails throughout the woods which can be enjoyed on foot, horseback or 4-wheeler.  There are also 3 creeks that run through the property.

One of the best parts of the homestead is the location.  Bedford will give you that small-town life without the long drive to civilization.  You will be able to relax on the enormous back porch and enjoy the privacy of the country without giving up the convenience of the city.   Two miles down the road is the brand new library, Poppy’s Country Store and Diner and the “town square” where you will find the courthouse and public buildings.

This homestead is an easy 12-minute drive to I-71 making it easy to get where ever you want to go.  It is also 12 miles from beautiful Madison, Indiana, voted the most charming town in America.

Whether you want to raise animals, grow vegetables, hunt, ride 4-wheelers through the woods, or just sit on your back deck and take in the view; this homestead is built to suit.

Let me give you a tour!

THE BIG RED BARN

The main barn on the property is large.

It is 32 by 34 and has a gravel floor.

It contains two large lofts and two workbenches.  There are electricity and running water in this barn. There is a utility sink with running water inside and a frost-free pump just outside.

In front of the big red barn is a fire pit perfect for entertaining and relaxing.

THE MILKING PARLOR

The milking parlor is where the family milk cow or goats are milked.  If you do not wish to have a dairy animal, this barn would be a great tack shed.

The milking parlor is a 12X20 building.  It has concrete floors and a sidewalk around the building.

Inside the barn, you will find electric – Lights, heat, outlets, hot and cold running water, a fan, plenty of counter space, cabinets and shelves for storage and a large loft.

To enter the milk barn there is a large, sliding door for animals and a man door on the side.

The barn is heated.  The heater can be controlled by a timer (set it so when you get to the barn in the morning it will be warm).

There is an exhaust fan at the end of the barn that is used to cool the building in hot weather.

There is running water, a utility sink (hot & cold running water) AND a Frost-free pump inside the barn.

PASTURES

Just outside the Milking Parlor, there is a small paddock and two pastures.

There are run-in style shelters in both fields and a frost-free pump for year-round water availability.

SHEEP/ CALF SHED

Behind the house, there is a shed, a chicken coop, and two more pastures.

The sheep/ calf shed is a roomy building (19 X19) that can be used to raise calves, keep goats, sheep or other animals.

It is stationed between two fields and can be opened on either side.

This allows livestock to be rotated onto either field and have access to the building.

There is a frost-free pump just outside the building.

There is electricity and lighting inside the shed.

An automatic, frost-free drinker is located near this barn.  This sort of drinker is a highly coveted investment on farms.  It truly provides fresh water at all times and it never freezes.  With this top-notch watering station, you will never need to fill water tanks or break the ice.

Yes, Dreams do come true.

MORE PASTURES

As mentioned, there are 2 more pastures located around the sheep/calf shed.

Having a pasture area divided into separate fields is an excellent solution for farmers/ homesteaders.  Ultimately, being able to rotate animals on and off of fields keeps land (and animals) healthier.  This allows the homesteader to keep more animals in less space.  It gives the land time to rest, recover and regrow.  It prevents over-grazing.  And it reduces parasite problems.

On this homestead, there are 4 pastures available.

Chicken Coop

The chicken coop is an Amish built shed – converted into a coop.  It is 8X8 and is equipped with Nesting boxes, Roosting bars and plenty of space.

This is a very large coop.  As many as 70 chickens can easily be housed in this accommodation for night-time roosting.

The flock of chickens comes with the property.

Enjoy fresh eggs the day you move in!

Pig Pens

There are 2 fenced-in areas on the farm where pigs or other small animals can be contained.

Both pens are tucked in the woods where many happy pigs have lived.  I hesitate to call them ‘pig pens’ because they provide much more space than a typical pen.

The pig pens are made of a woven wire fence.

These little nooks on the farm afford the exact amount of space pigs need to live and be happy.  Inside both areas, there is a pig hutch, plenty of vegetation and mature trees shading the pigs from sunburn.

THE PORCH

Let’s face it, if you are moving to the country, outdoor living is where it’s at.

This homestead may provide the most incredible outdoor living space money can buy.  If you want to spend your time enjoying the outdoors, this is the place for you.

This porch area is made with composite decking so it never needs to be stained or painted.

A HUGE 8-foot sliding glass door provides direct access to the 27 X 18 FOOT SCREENED IN BACK PORCH.

This is an enormous porch.   It allows plenty of space for a living and dining area.  Imagine watching your favorite show (yes, there is a TV hookup on the porch!), reading a great book or hanging out with your favorite people outside without any bugs.

Next to the screened-in back porch is an outside deck perfect for grilling and enjoying the view.

OUTDOOR SHOWER

When you live in the country, there is nothing like an outdoor shower.  Whether you want to clean up some messy kids or enjoy the great outdoors like never before, this shower hits the spot.

The outdoor shower is located right off the screened-in porch.

It has hot and cold running water and works just like the showers inside a house.

THE HOME

The house is a charming cape-cod style with two dormers and a 24X24 attached 2 car garage.

If you have wandered around this blog, you probably know that I make food.  Lots of it.  This kitchen has nourished my family well.

Here are a few features of the kitchen:

    • Haas Custom Kitchen Cabinets
    • Tile Backsplash
    • Granite Countertops
    • Farmhouse stainless steel sink
    • KitchenAid Double Oven
    • TWO Bosch Dishwashers

The kitchen is open to the great room creating a gorgeous open concept.  This kitchen also provides plenty of counter space for canning, pickling, processing and scratch cooking!

The dining room is also a part of the open first floor.

Enjoy the view of the fabulous porch and the back of the property from the dining room table.

The first-floor powder room is just off the main living space.

The laundry room is on the first floor.  If you happen to have as much laundry as I do, you will enjoy the 2 dryer hookups.

Master Suite

The Master Bedroom Suite is on the main floor (BR #1).

The master bath is fantastic.

I have logged hours in this tub.

The Upstairs

Our youngest son’s room (BR #2) features a big double window that overlooks the back of the property.  Sorry about all the dead things…

Our youngest daughter’s room (BR #3)  is spacious.

This is our oldest daughter’s room (BR #4).

There is a fourth room upstairs that can be used as a bedroom (BR #5).  We called it “the multipurpose room.”  It has a dormer with a window and a built-in window seat.

We use this room as our homeschool room.  It has also been used as a teen hang-out, a guest bedroom, a craft room, a sewing room, and a place to watch movies.

There are two full bathrooms on the second floor.

This is the first of two bathrooms.

This is the second upstairs bathroom.

The Basement

There are two important qualities in a basement –

  1. That it is finished
  2. That it is large

This basement is both!  This is a great space.  It can be used as a family hangout place, a place for kids to be kids, a grownup getaway, a workout space, a music studio, a space for guests to stay, anything!

There is 910 finished square feet of living space in the basement.

There is a room behind the barn doors.

Downstairs there is a full bathroom.

The house is newly remodeled, it has recently been repainted.  It is move-in ready!

This lovely homestead can be yours.

  • Whether you want to escape to the country…
  • Grow your own food…
  • Keep livestock…
  • Own your own horse…
  • Hunt and trap…
  • Or just get out of the city…
